Myths & Concerns
Vijaya 101
Vijaya is the name used in classical Ayurveda for the plant known botanically as Cannabis sativa L.In Ayurvedic texts, it is referenced in certain formulations related to pain, sleep and mind–body balance. At Wholeleaf, we use standardised leaf extract, formulated within the Ayurvedic and legal framework that applies in India.
Vijaya refers to the same plant species that many people know as cannabis. The difference is context:
- In Ayurveda, Vijaya is used in measured, medicinal ways, usually in combination with other herbs.
- Recreational or unregulated use is not what we do or promote.
We formulate Ayurveda-inspired, regulated products that use a controlled amount of Vijaya leaf extract under strict quality and compliance standards.
Vijaya leaf extract is an extract obtained from the leaves of the Vijaya plant. It contains naturally occurring plant compounds that interact with key receptors involved in pain, inflammation, mood and sleep regulation. Our extracts are:
- Derived from approved, traceable sources
- Standardised to help maintain consistency between batches
- Tested by third-party labs for quality and safety parameters
Your body has its own balancing system called the endocannabinoid system (ECS). It helps regulate things like pain, mood, sleep and immune responses.
Vijaya contains plant compounds that can interact with this system. When used correctly and under medical guidance, Vijaya-based formulations may help:
- Make long-standing pain feel more manageable
- Support a sense of calm
- Make it easier to rest and sleep
They don’t cure conditions, but they can become a useful tool to improve day-to-day comfort and quality of life.
CBD (cannabidiol) is one of many naturally occurring compounds in Cannabis sativa / Vijaya. It is non-intoxicating and is widely studied for its potential role in pain, anxiety and sleep support, although responses vary from person to person.
Our formulations use Vijaya leaf extract, where CBD is just one of several naturally occurring components in a full-spectrum extract, alongside other plant compounds.
The skin also has ECS receptors (including CB2) on local nerves and immune cells.
When you apply a Vijaya-based oil, balm or roll-on:
- The plant compounds act locally where you apply them
- They interact with these CB2 receptors in the skin
- This can provide targeted, longer-lasting comfort for people compared with topicals that don’t work through this pathway
If you ever notice irritation or a rash on the skin, stop using the product on that area and speak to a doctor.
Legality & Compliance
Yes. Ayurvedic medicines that contain Vijaya leaf extract are approved and licensed by the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India and are permitted for medical use.
Wholeleaf’s formulations fall under this framework. We operate with the required AYUSH licences to develop, manufacture and sell our approved Vijaya-based products in India, in line with applicable laws and guidelines.

Side Effects & Safety
Like any active herbal formulation, Vijaya-based products can cause temporary side effects in some people, particularly oral products and especially if taken in higher-than-recommended doses. These may include:
- Dry mouth
- Increased appetite
- Drowsiness or a feeling of heaviness
- Temporary changes in mood
- A sense of slowed reaction time or reduced alertness
These effects are usually short-lived and tend to ease on their own.
- These potential side effects primarily relate to oral formulations.
- Our topical products are formulated for local use and, when used as directed, are not known for systemic side effects. However, as with any skin-applied product, some individuals may experience local irritation or allergy.
For oral products:
- Drink water and stay hydrated
- Have a light meal or snack
- Avoid driving, operating machinery or doing tasks that need full attention
- Rest and allow a few hours for the effects to wear off
For topical products:
If you notice redness, itching, rash or burning at the application site:
- Stop using the product on that area
- Wash the affected area gently with mild soap and water
- If irritation persists, worsens, or you suspect an allergy, contact your doctor
In all cases, if the effects feel severe, distressing or persistent, seek medical attention and inform your prescribing practitioner about what you have taken and in what dose.
Dosage & Usage
There is no one-size-fits-all dose. The right amount depends on:
- Body weight and sensitivity
- The nature and intensity of your condition
- Other medications or health conditions
This is why we strongly recommend:
- Always following your doctor’s prescribed dose
- Starting low and increasing slowly only if advised by your practitioner
- Not self-adjusting above the recommended dose
Taking more than the recommended amount can increase the risk of unwanted effects such as:
- Excessive drowsiness
- Changes in mood or perception
- Reduced alertness or slower reaction times
Always:
- Stick to your prescription
- Avoid using oral products with alcohol or other sedating medicines, unless your doctor approves
- Contact your doctor if you feel the product is “too strong” or not suitable for you
Storage & Handling
To maintain quality:
- Store in a cool, dry place
- Keep away from direct sunlight and heat
- Ensure bottles, caps and droppers are properly closed after each use
- Keep out of reach of children
If a product has any specific storage instructions on the label, please follow those carefully.
